From Roaming Nomad to Online Community Builder
Online platforms have made it easier than ever to expand our social circles, bridging geographical distances and fostering connections based on shared interests. The average Facebook user boasts an impressive 338 ‘friends,’ a number that would have been unimaginable in previous eras. While online platforms have expanded our social networks, the depth of these connections often varies, suggesting that our capacity for truly meaningful relationships remains relatively constant, constrained by cognitive limitations and time commitments.
In my twenties, the open road was my constant companion. A nomadic spirit fueled my desire to explore new places and meet a diverse range of people. Often driving between Wisconsin and South Carolina, living and teaching in Miitaka, Japan and Wuhan, China, and general local festivities in-between will forever be vivid places in my memory. While these experiences were invaluable, the transient nature of my lifestyle made building lasting connections challenging. This was largely due to my constant relocating, and partly because I was terrible at noticing friendships that were good for me.
Fast forward to my thirties, and a new chapter unfolded. With a desire to pivot in my career in education and begin sharing my artistic passions with the world, I re-engaged with the digital realm. Twitch became my platform, a space where I could connect with like-minded individuals while showcasing my creative talents. Building an online community around my (he)art has been incredibly rewarding. It has allowed me to forge meaningful connections with people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support that transcends geographical boundaries. And this time, I was clearer with what kinds of friendships I needed to thrive.
My personal journey reflects a growing trend. Research indicates that individuals dissatisfied with their offline social support often turn to online communities for solace and connection. Moreover, the act of making friends on social media has been linked to increased longevity, highlighting the positive impact of feeling connected. While they cannot replace the richness of in-person interactions, they offer a unique opportunity to connect with people who share our interests, passions, and experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned digital nomad or simply seeking to expand your social circle, the online world can be a powerful tool for building lasting friendships and finding your place in the world.
However, the sheer quantity of online connections doesn’t necessarily equate to quality. Research suggests that our capacity for deep, meaningful relationships remains relatively constant, regardless of the digital landscape. We may have hundreds of online ‘friends,’ but the number of truly intimate connections often stays within a smaller, manageable range. This limitation is rooted in cognitive constraints and the time required to nurture genuine bonds. They can enrich our lives and foster meaningful connections, and they can also create a sense of isolation and superficiality. A balanced approach, combining online interactions with genuine face-to-face connections, is crucial for cultivating fulfilling relationships. Happy chatting!
