If you’re looking for a fresh co-op experience, Strikey Sisters might just hit the spot.
We are a fan of games with a co-op experience. We have cried over It Takes Two and spent more hours than we’d like to mention in various MMO worlds and shooter games. You can read more about our suggestions on co-op games in previous posts.
We discovered Strikey Sisters from a panel at PAX West 2023 and recently we published the highlighted clips from our gameplay on Sam’s streams over at twitch.tv/slurbol
Here’s what we thought about the game:
The Good:
- Familiar Yet Unique Gameplay: Think classic Breakout, but with adorable characters, RPG elements, and a playful twist. You each control a character who can deflect the ball like a paddle, but can also attack and cast magic, adding a layer of strategy and teamwork.
- Charming Pixel Art: The vibrant visuals and catchy soundtrack evoke nostalgia while feeling modern. It’s lighthearted and fun, perfect for a relaxed gaming session.
- Accessible Yet Challenging: Easy to pick up, but the difficulty ramps up nicely, offering a satisfying test of communication and coordination. You’ll be doing a little Burbol shimmy after tough boss battles!
- Variety and Replayability: Different characters, spells, and power-ups keep things fresh. Explore diverse environments, tackle multiple modes, and unlock secrets – plenty to keep you coming back for more.
Things to Consider:
- Repetitive Core Mechanic: It’s still Breakout at its heart, so if you’re craving something radically different, this might not be it.
- Simple Story: Expect a lighthearted narrative, not a deep emotional journey. Can at times have snarky/mean-spirited writing.
- Potential Frustration: Communication is key! If you tend to get competitive or impatient, it could lead to arguments. We found no easy way to split tasks evenly, so if you are a couple that has a “yours vs mine” mentality in your gameplay, you might not enjoy this.
Verdict:
If you enjoyed the cooperative aspects of your “standard favorites”, Strikey Sisters offers a charming and unique twist on classic gameplay. It’s perfect for casual sessions, tests your teamwork skills, and provides delightful visuals and a lighthearted atmosphere. Just be aware of the potential for repetitiveness and the importance of communication!
